Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will lead The Black Tapes, an eight-episode supernatural investigation series that MGM+ has ordered for production in Vancouver in January 2027. The adaptation brings the horror podcast created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae to television.

The Game of Thrones actor plays Dr Richard Strand, a psychiatrist with a mysterious past. He joins scientist Alex Regan to investigate hauntings, possessions, disappearances and legends, hoping to explain the cases collected on the black tapes. Their work instead draws them towards an occult world and an apocalyptic conspiracy.

Miles and Bae will write and executive produce the adaptation alongside a team including John Rogers, Kearie Peak and Jennifer Court. MGM+ Studios is producing. The service announced the order on 26 October, following earlier reports linking Coster-Waldau to the project.

Vancouver is set to host the shoot from January, adding a podcast adaptation with an established audience to its production calendar. MGM+ plans to carry the series in markets including the US, UK and Ireland. The draw is the collision between Strand’s determination to debunk the supernatural and evidence that refuses to behave.
