Daniel MacPherson is reuniting with Russell Crowe in Bluefly, joining the science-fiction action thriller alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The new casting, reported by Variety, brings the Beast co-stars back together for a mission far removed from the fighting cage.
MacPherson will play Dugan, a Special Forces soldier hardened by years of combat. Nimród Antal, who directed Predators, is directing the film, which was already announced with Crowe and Chopra Jonas attached.
Set in the Congo, Bluefly follows a covert military operation sent to recover a missing high-tech aircraft. Crowe plays Benny, a former pilot with a troubled past, while Chopra Jonas is Myla Reese, a United Nations interpreter whose knowledge of the region makes her essential to the mission.
As the team travels upriver through militia-held territory, an unexplained force begins to distort reality. Benny appears to know more about that threat than he is prepared to tell his companions.
The film also reunites MacPherson with Beast writer David Frigerio, who shares Bluefly’s screenplay credit with William Eubank and Carlyle Eubank. In Beast, MacPherson played former mixed martial arts fighter Patton James opposite Crowe’s veteran trainer, Sammy.
Bluefly’s Congo setting will be recreated on Australia’s Gold Coast. Highland now lists the project as in production.
