Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is heading back to cinemas on 11 December, with Universal announcing a re-release across more than 1,000 screens in the United States and Canada. The return includes IMAX and IMAX 70mm presentations alongside other formats.
Odysseus may be trying to get home, but Universal has another destination in mind first: the multiplex. The studio says the film has earned US$626 million in the US and Canada and US$1.175 billion elsewhere, for a rounded worldwide total of US$1.80 billion.
Universal describes that result as the biggest of both Nolan’s career and the studio’s history. The new engagement gives audiences another chance to see the epic on a large screen rather than treating its home release as the final stop.
That home release is scheduled for 17 November, with digital purchase, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions arriving before the December theatrical return. Universal’s package includes more than 90 minutes of special features overseen by Nolan.
The extras explore the film’s sets, locations, casting, fight choreography, effects and score through behind-the-scenes footage and cast and crew interviews.
Nolan wrote and directed the adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, with Matt Damon leading a cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson. Emma Thomas and Nolan produced the film.
