The Gilded Age has found more people willing to enter its drawing rooms. The fourth-season premiere drew nearly 4 million US viewers in its first three days, making it the HBO drama’s biggest season opener yet.
HBO’s figures put the 1 November episode 25% ahead of the third-season premiere, which attracted 3.2 million viewers over the same period. The total combines HBO television and HBO Max streaming audiences, rather than measuring only the original Sunday-night broadcast.
The result extends a run of growth for Julian Fellowes’ series. Season three set successive audience records before its finale reached 5 million viewers after three days. The new premiere is a record for a season launch, rather than the show’s most-watched episode.
On screen, social advancement remains considerably messier. Carrie Coon’s Bertha Russell has reshaped New York society, but the fourth season makes her family confront the cost. Christine Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn sees a chance to reclaim her position, while Marian Brook charts her own course and Peggy Scott tries to win over her future in-laws.
Louisa Jacobson and Denée Benton return as Marian and Peggy, alongside Morgan Spector and Cynthia Nixon. Fellowes, who created Downton Abbey, remains a writer and executive producer with Sonja Warfield.
The eight-episode season continues on Sundays on HBO and HBO Max in the United States, with the finale scheduled for 20 December 2026.
