Matt Damon and David Letterman have joined The Gilded Age’s society crowd, although their assignment was considerably smaller than their reputations.
The actor and former late-night host appear briefly in the fourth-season premiere, walking across a New York street in period costume. Damon sports a top hat and prominent moustache, while Letterman’s beard and bowler hat complete the unlikely double act.
The pair’s appearance is a playful distraction from the more consequential manoeuvring in Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes’ drama. This season, Carrie Coon’s Bertha Russell faces the family consequences of her social climb, while Christine Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn spots an opportunity to regain her position. Louisa Jacobson’s Marian is finding a new direction, while Denée Benton’s Peggy is trying to win over her future in-laws.
The eight-episode season began November 1, airing at 9pm ET/PT on HBO and streaming on HBO Max in the US. The familiar faces in the street are a bonus; the battle for standing remains the main attraction.
