A documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is giving a Batman villain an unexpectedly close fight at the North American box office.

Sunday studio estimates put You Can See Everything on US$10.6 million for the weekend, just ahead of Clayface’s US$10.4 million. The US and Canada result remains provisional, with final figures still to settle the order.

Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the documentary starts with Holmes weeks away from entering prison. It is challenging for its first weekend at number one in its third week of release; the DC body-horror film is in its second.

Elsewhere, Resident Evil reached US$400 million worldwide, making it the film franchise’s highest-grossing entry without adjusting for inflation. The previous leader, The Final Chapter, finished with US$312 million globally. The reboot added an estimated US$2.5 million in North America in its seventh weekend.

Resident Evil director Zach Cregger, whose earlier horror hits include Barbarian and Weapons, puts Austin Abrams through a nightmare delivery run as a medical courier.

Laika’s stop-motion fantasy Wildwood placed third with an estimated US$7.5 million, followed by the Olivia Colman–Alexander Skarsgård romantic fantasy Wicker on US$4.1 million.
