Paul Bettany has revealed that an intense VisionQuest performance burst about 10 blood vessels in one eye, leaving it red for roughly two weeks.

The actor, who plays Marvel’s android superhero Vision, told Jimmy Kimmel Live on 29 October that he was acting out the effects of a device interfering with his character’s brain.

Bettany described himself as “wildly overacting” and called the experience “a lesson in less is more”. Kimmel showed a photograph of the affected eye.

Filming continued, Bettany said, with the production having to remove the redness from the footage.

VisionQuest follows the character after WandaVision, with his memories restored but his feelings harder to recover. James Spader returns as Ultron, one of several artificial intelligences occupying a mansion inside Vision’s mind.

Bettany explained that the AIs help Vision process his day and understand humanity. Outside that crowded head, the character is keeping a low profile working in a Scottish pub.

The series is streaming on Disney+.
