Joey King and LaKeith Stanfield are set to star in Safe Space, a science-fiction romantic comedy giving bad relationships an extraterrestrial complication.

King plays Sherrie, a scientist who leaves a toxic romance with a colleague, then falls for an alien played by Stanfield. Escaping the office, it seems, does not necessarily improve the dating pool.

Gillian Wallace Horvat will direct, following her debut I Blame Society, which premiered at Rotterdam in 2020. Safe Space will be her second feature, with Karen Lunder producing through Outdoor Cat. Lunder previously worked on Arrival and Thirteen Lives.

According to Variety, French sales company Lucky Number is taking the film to the American Film Market alongside CAA Media Finance and WME Independent. Buyers will be shown a sizzle reel as the team puts the financing together.

King, known for The Act and Bullet Train, joins Stanfield, the Oscar-nominated Judas and the Black Messiah actor whose credits include Get Out and Uncut Gems. A US shoot is planned for the second quarter of 2027, with further casting underway.
