Ron Howard is putting one of photography’s most recognisable names on the other side of the lens. Avedon has a new trailer and a Netflix premiere set for 11 November, following its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The documentary explores Richard Avedon’s life through his personal archive, combining previously unseen photographs, footage of him at work and new interviews with close collaborators. The subjects he photographed ranged from presidents and movie stars to miners and people living far from the spotlight.

Rather than simply presenting a greatest-hits gallery, the film looks at the person making those images and the ideas behind them. Howard’s account connects Avedon’s fashion and portrait work with the changing visual identity of twentieth-century America.

Imagine Documentaries and Fifth Season made the film in association with the Richard Avedon Foundation. Howard and Brian Grazer are among its producers. Netflix’s 21 October update includes the trailer, offering a first taste before the documentary reaches streaming audiences next month.
