Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to Jack of Spades, Joel Coen’s Gothic mystery starring Patsy Ferran and Josh O’Connor. The film will reach cinemas in the northern autumn of 2027 before streaming on Netflix.
The story is set in the Scottish Highlands and adapts Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. Damian Lewis, familiar from Homeland, and Phantom Thread’s Lesley Manville also star in the tale of intrigue and betrayal.
Joel directs, but his brother Ethan shares the screenplay credit alongside Eleanor Catton and Conor McPherson. The brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a 2018 western anthology, also went to Netflix. Joel’s subsequent solo film was The Tragedy of Macbeth.
O’Connor returns to Netflix after playing Prince Charles in The Crown and appearing in Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man. Netflix sees Jack of Spades as an awards contender, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
