A new live-action Stranger Things series is winding the clock back to the 1950s. Netflix has announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for 2028, with longtime series writer Kate Trefry leading the show and Atonement director Joe Wright directing its first three episodes.

Announced on Stranger Things Day, 6 November, the prequel will introduce new heroes and villains in a new setting. Production will take place in New Mexico.

Trefry has already explored an earlier chapter of this universe in Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Her stage play follows Henry Creel’s troubled past in Hawkins in 1959, but Other Worlds goes back further still. She will serve as co-creator, showrunner and writer.

Matt and Ross Duffer, who will executive produce, described the project as “Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh” in Netflix’s announcement. Trefry says she is returning to the original show’s horror, wonder and mystery while telling a new story.

Viewers can already revisit Hawkins in the animated Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, which follows the familiar crew through new supernatural trouble in 1985. Its first two seasons and all five seasons of the original series are streaming on Netflix.

For the next adventure, the Duffers leave viewers with one instruction: “watch the skies, nerds!”
