The PAW Patrol pups have another cinema rescue on their schedule. A fourth animated film is in development, with Paramount targeting a 2029 theatrical release and Cal Brunker returning to direct.
Brunker will again write with Bob Barlen, keeping the partnership behind the first three films together. Canadian company Spin Master Entertainment is making the sequel with Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies.
The announcement comes after PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie sent Ryder and his rescue dogs to a dinosaur island, where they met Rex, a pup who knows his prehistoric neighbours. It is the latest big-screen outing for characters who began life in a preschool television series in 2013.
Those cinema trips have added up. The first three films have taken roughly half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, giving the fourth adventure a sizeable audience to build on. The small-screen rescue squad has become a dependable family-film franchise.
Brunker says the new story has already been written. With the director and his writing partner returning, the next job is turning that adventure into the pups’ 2029 outing.
