Dan Rather’s long television career now comes with a free viewing option. Frank Marshall’s documentary Rather is being made available on YouTube from 26 October, bringing its portrait of the veteran American journalist outside a subscription service.

The 95-minute film traces the man behind the familiar news voice through decades of reporting, including the civil rights movement, Watergate and Tiananmen Square. Rather is both its subject and one of its contributors, alongside family members Robin Rather and Martin Rather.

The voices around him range from journalists Ronan Farrow, Soledad O’Brien and Shepard Smith to Samantha Bee and Andy Cohen. The film connects that personal story with a wider question: how American journalism has changed across a career spent reporting major events.

Rather, Wavelength, Original Productions and Anchor Entertainment announced the free release together. The announcement includes a direct link to the full film on YouTube.
