Australian director Anthony Maras wanted a different kind of suspense after Hotel Mumbai. With Pressure, the danger is not an attacker audiences can see, but a weather system that could derail the D-Day landings.

That uncertainty drew Maras to the project. The drama follows meteorologist James Stagg, played by Andrew Scott, and the decision facing Dwight D. Eisenhower, played by Brendan Fraser, in the final days before the invasion.

“I think a character just has to be compelling,” Maras said of Stagg in an interview with The AU Review, arguing that the scientist’s determination to tell the truth mattered more than making him instantly likeable.

Fraser offered a contrasting quality: the warmth and trust audiences already associate with him. Maras wanted those qualities to help reveal Eisenhower’s vulnerability rather than present an untouchable historical figure.

The filmmaker also described rewriting the story during COVID, when arguments over evidence, expertise and political demands made its conflicts feel immediate. Pressure opens in Australian cinemas on 29 October.
