Sarah Snook could be heading back to HBO with The Birds, a proposed limited series inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film and Daphne du Maurier’s original story. HBO has taken the project into development after Universal Global Television brought it to buyers.
The move is a development deal, not a series order. Snook’s attachment was reported in May; the new step brings the Australian Succession star’s next potential television role closer to the network where she played Shiv Roy.
Snook would play Myra, who returns to her hometown with her young daughter amid a difficult custody dispute. She begins looking into a childhood friend’s unexplained disappearance, but the danger quickly becomes personal. As she tries to keep her daughter safe, lethal bird attacks appear connected to the crime.
Tom Spezialy, whose credits include The Leftovers and Watchmen, is writing the project, with David Heyman’s Heyday Television involved. That combination puts a murder mystery at the centre of the familiar nature-turns-hostile nightmare, rather than simply repeating Hitchcock’s story.
