Netflix has renewed The Diplomat for a fifth season, giving Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler another round of international crises and the considerable diplomatic incident that is her marriage.
Created by Debora Cahn, the political drama follows the US ambassador to Britain as professional judgement and private loyalties repeatedly pull in opposite directions. Rufus Sewell plays her husband Hal, whose ambitions have helped turn their relationship into a geopolitical problem.
The renewal follows the fourth season’s 15 October debut. That run puts Russell and Bradley Whitford’s Todd Penn up against the dangerous partnership between Hal and President Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney. Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah also feature in the established ensemble.
Netflix says the series has accumulated more than 130 million views across its four seasons since launching in 2023, reaching its Top 10 in 87 countries.
Its international reach extends behind the camera. Season four filmed in more than 15 cities and towns across the UK, US and Italy, including London’s Lancaster House and Goldsmiths’ Hall.
All four seasons are streaming now. Kate’s next round of negotiations is officially on the agenda.
